This summer, the Northeast Region was once again honored to host the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships, held Aug. 18-19 in Burlington, Vt. The weekend was an amazing collection of events and races and even more exciting for the region, of the 3,000+ athletes competing, nearly half of them were from the Northeast. As any team knows, home field advantage is huge and the region’s athletes won over a quarter of all podium spots. To celebrate one of the most anticipated events on the USA
Triathlon calendar, the Northeast Regional Council had a hospitality tent on site where athletes could gather for a post-race snack
and rest or chat with council members. The region’s junior elite athletes used the tent as a home base as well. Over 200 athletes stopped by to talk and share their thoughts and ideas about the region, the race and life in general. The best regional performance in the Olympic-Distance Age Group Championships went to Catherine Sterling (Mass.), second female finisher overall, and Paul Noone (Mass.), who finished in the top 25. In the Sprint National Championship, honors went to Sonja Kent (Mass.), first female finisher overall and James Linville (N.Y.), sixth male finisher overall.
The VTRI, a race for local state residents, attracted 82 Vermont athletes. Top honors went to Rima Carlson and William McNulty. At 77 years old, Diane Stuart (Conn.), was the oldest regional competitor of the weekend, while the youngest, Spencer Ralston (Conn.), was a full 60 years younger at just 17.
SOUTH MIDWEST
The South Midwest Region was represented well at the
Club National Championships as well as the Youth National Championships. The Club National Championships were held in Oklahoma City on Sept. 22-23, which allowed for a strong turnout by regional teams. Congratulations to Tri OKC for winning the USAT Division V National Club Championship! For the Youth National Championships in West Chester, Ohio;
Trinity Multisport, a newly formed youth triathlon team based out of College Station, Texas, placed third overall in the Team Competition. Abby Ross, a 9-year-old College Station fourth- grader, won the USA Triathlon Youth National Championship in her age group. Christiano Migliaccio, a 7-year-old College Station second-grader, placed third in his age group and Monica Lopez- Aguirre, an 8-year-old from The Woodlands, also placed first in her age group. “All of our team members who competed did extremely well and contributed to our team placement. We placed much higher
than larger and more established teams and the award highlights the strength of our young team. We are very proud of all of them,” said Team Director Louie Migliaccio. The South Midwest Region wishes to congratulate Trinity Multisport and the phenomenal success of its members and coach! Volunteers are always welcome and play a critical role in the success of the region and its goals and objectives. Interested in volunteering for a committee or the council?
