From the Editor DON’T LOSE SIGHT OF THE FUN By Jayme Ramson During the years I’ve worked at USA
Triathlon, the Youth National Championship always has been my favorite event. Childlike exuberance is on full display as most of the kids are all smiles after the race (and many during) regardless of whether they won an age group title. Kids just want to have fun and “play” triathlon with their friends. But there is a concern with youth events like this, and it’s becoming more apparent each year. Parents leaping barricades with no regard for the officials or the safety of other athletes — just to run alongside their child. Parents exhibiting poor sportsmanship
MAILBAG
A number of readers commented on Bob Seebohar’s processed foods article from the fall 2012 issue of USA Triathlon Magazine. Here are a couple of the responses.
NEW DIET LEADS TO NEW PR
I went on a diet cutting back all processed foods for 30 days prior to my last triathlon and ended up shaving close to 3.5 minutes off and achieved my personal best sprint distance time of 1:21:58. Took first in category and 20th overall. I credit the diet with my increased endurance and stamina to perform so well. — Jeff Roselip, 46, Harbour Beach, Fla.
EXTRA EXPENSE WORTH THE RESULTS
My wife and I have largely eliminated processed foods from our diets, and are 100 percent healthier and happier as a result. We buy organic fruits and vegetables and eat more fish and poultry than
in front of their kids.
As the youth triathlon membership continues to grow (see page 30 for our cover story), so does the opportunity for parents to be the best role models possible. Learn about proper race distances for youth athletes. Offer encouragement and support for your children. Don’t push too hard. Set a good example. Most of all, make sure your tri kid is having fun out there.

[red] meat. When we do indulge in the occasional burger, we buy only beef that comes from grass-fed, free-range cows that haven’t been injected with hormones or steroids. Our grocery bills may be a little higher, but the extra expense is an investment in our health that we are happy to make. — Angelo Esposito, Arlington, Va.
LEANER AND LOOKING FOR RACE SOLUTIONS I was reading your article from the Fall 2012 USAT magazine, and
I totally agree. I have lost over 14 pounds in the past year, and I am definitely becoming a leaner triathlete. I find it easy to fill my diet with more whole foods once I know what I am looking for and how to track appropriately. My question is what can I use to get the energy I need for my races?
