Metal building system resurrects facility destroyed in Hurricane Katrina

Circle #14 on reader service card.

Part of the setting for the “Green Lantern” movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, the original Landmark Aviation facility in New Orleans was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and had to be rebuilt. Located at the New Or- leans Lakefront Airport, the facility features a 31,000-square-foot Fixed Base Operator that includes a 20,000-square-foot hangar and 11,000 square feet of space for a lobby and offi ce area. Nucor Building Systems, Waterloo, Ind., provided a pre-engineered metal building structure set on a post-tension foundation. Nucor also provided the metal roof, the structural metal stud walls in the offi ce area and the hangar’s metal wall panels on 10-inch wall girts. The pre-engineered steel build- ing was constructed by Nucor Authorized Builder, Regal Construction, LaPlace, La. The lobby and offi ce façade is clad with brick

and stucco masonry with a large missile impact- rated aluminum storefront and hangar clad with metal panels. The hangar door is 105 by 28 feet and operated using a four-leaf-motor. For the “Green Lantern” movie, the building was ideal because of its large clear spans. The building serves as the location for Reynolds’ job where he fl ies airplanes. In one scene, a futuristic plane is supported by the steel structure. The owner is Houston-based Landmark Aviation.
