Tensar VMax® turf reinforcement mat for bank erosion control
the problem worse, and flood frequency and intensity appear to be increasing.
Constant and expensive work is required to maintain an efficient waterway through dredging and redeposition of material; this costs many millions of Euros annually. At the same time, constant erosion was lowering mean water height and affecting the water table in the adjacent floodplain habitat; incipient drought conditions caused vegetation dieback and associated loss of birds, animals and insects.
To combat this, the Water and Navigation Authority of Duisburg-Rhine is investing in the excavation of a three kilometre by approximately 200 metre wide flood relief channel on the West Bank, behind the promontory. The new channel will act as an alternative river bed to accommodate flows when the main river rises to 80 cm above the mean river height, adding a capacity of nearly 20%. Work on the flood relief channel was started in 2009 and will be finished by the end of 2014.
“In the flood relief channel design, it was important to minimize any erosion of the channel bed and banks,” commented Andy Winter, Tensar Erosion Control Manager. “Otherwise there was a potential to cause disruption to the existing channel and more siltation downstream.
“To combat this we designed an integrated erosion control plan which is intended to encourage natural vegetation to attenuate of flow velocity; Tensar’s VMax® turf reinforcement mat is ideal for the less steep banks to prevent wave and level related erosion of the margins. In this way, we will combine relief of flood volume through the main channel with control of suspended solids, and start to rebuild the habitat with sympathetic vegetation and improved water retention.”
