WaStop® non-return valves are specifically designed for use in most types of outfalls. Competing with traditional duckbill style valves but offering a new range of possibilities where flap valves and penstocks are not a feasible solution, WaStop® valves have seen increasing successes in projects throughout the UK and Ireland. Following the
catastrophic flooding in spring of this year it is no surprise that a great number of WaStops® have been sold for storm drains, pumping stations, outfalls, community sewerage systems, private basement conversions and more.
Recently an installation was completed at Markham Brook (see picture). A 1200DN WaStop® was designed by our engineers with a specially shaped flange to fit the ‘snug shaped’ existing headwall. Insufficient headwall space meant the installation of a flap valve or duckbill valve would have involved increased civils to the structure or additional product design. For security our engineers also designed and supplied a metal grill which
prevents tampering and increases site health and safety. Installed by our expert installation team for Nomenca this WaStop® was fitted and tested in a few short hours, providing Markham Brook outfall with a robust non-return valve preventing backflow and reducing local flood risk.
A tidal outfall at Tenby posed a flood risk as sea water was forced into the pipe during high tide. JU Bowen was contracted by the
Environment Agency to install a suitable solution into this constantly submersed outfall to reduce the flood risk to the local area. As the WaStop® fits inside the pipe, no protruding valve components are exposed to the force of wave action which can cause tearing and failure with other backflow prevention solutions. considered the best valve to install in these conditions. Due to a failing pipe flange and lack of headwall to install the valve, an expansion collar was used to internally attach the WaStop® to the existing pipe outfall.
