An ambitious €54 million flood relief plan for the lower River Rhine is also designed to improve the ecology and threatened habitats of the local floodplain. The Rhine is one of Europe’s most important freight highways, carrying in excess of 200 million tonnes annually. However, maintaining this highway for human use often means battling against natural forces, such as frequent flooding, which reconfigure the course and flow of the river through bank and bed erosion, and sediment deposit.
