CLIMATE WEEK SWAP SHOP

All across society, there are people developing new solutions to create a world which is cleaner, greener, more sustainable and healthier, and that can deliver economic prosperity. The aim of Climate Week, as a national occasion, is to annually renew our confidence and ambition to combat climate change.

What else can PTAs do?

The Climate Week Challenge is Britain’s biggest environmental competition. Over 130,000 people participated in 2012 in a challenge to come up with an idea to green a local space and make it more environmentally friendly. The winners went on to take part in workshops organised by industry and business leaders. In addition to the Swap, speak to the school about taking part in the Climate Week Challenge.

Bubble and Squeak is part of Climate Week’s food campaign to encourage people to consider how the food they eat impacts on their environment. The traditional British fry-up Bubble & Squeak is the ultimate eco-meal. Made from potatoes and greens, it uses up leftovers, can be sourced locally and doesn’t need meat and dairy. Encourage parents to use up their leftovers on Sunday for the perfect Monday evening meal, or even suggest that the school canteen puts on a meal around the theme of ‘low-carbon’ – for more ideas visit www.climateweek.com/green-your- cuisine. Other events ideas include:

Show a climate-change related

Encourage your children to create film art, poems, plays, stories and design ideas which are responses to climate change – and exhibit them at the school during Climate Week.

Encourage cycling and walking to school and/or publicise lift share services.

Run a low-carbon coffee morning.

Hold an evening concert by sunset or candle light by a school band or orchestra.

Start allotment planting for the gardening rubbish – make it into an educational programme to show people how to set-up their own compost pile and use it for better gardening.

Start a school compost bin for school community.

Have a switch off campaign and switch off all school lights and equipment overnight or over the weekend.

Climate Week 2013 is expected to be bigger and better than ever, with the potential to reach thousands more people and inspire them to take action on climate change. As drivers of community change, parents and schools are in a unique position to galvanise this action in their communities and among their residents. Your PTA can be part of Britain’s biggest environmental occasion yet.

Register your PTAs involvement now at www.climateweek.com and be part of the UK’s biggest climate change campaign.
