LIFE’S A BEACH Take your pick of family-friendly beaches where the kids can happily play in the sand while the adults join in or kick back and soak up some sun. Some of the nation’s top beaches are less than two hours from the theme parks of Central Florida, among them St Petersburg/Clearwater’s Caladesi Island and Fort de Soto Park – both named as America’s Best Beach in the annual rankings by foremost expert Dr Beach. In fact, Florida beaches have
taken top spot seven times in the 22 years of the Top 10 list – almost one-third of the total.
Hawaii has fared even better,
with 11 beaches on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island taking the honours. The 2012 title, however, went to Coronado Beach in San Diego, California, where an $8 million renovation of the historic, 124-year-old Hotel Del Coronado, completed in April 2012, saw the unveiling of Blue Octopus Family Suites. They feature an ocean-
inspired kid’s bedroom with bunk beds, bean bag chairs, a toy chest and a large-screen TV with Nintendo Wii console in addition to the renovated master bedroom and lounge. There are more great beaches
on the Gulf of Mexico in Texas and Alabama, besides Florida’s Panhandle and Sarasota, and on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, where
