FROM CYCLING TO KAYAKING TO JEEP RIDES THROUGH THE DESERT TO HOT-AIR BALLOONING, YOU'LL HARDLY HAVE TIME TO CATCH YOUR BREATH IN THE USA
he USA is one giant adventure playground for those seeking an
adrenalin rush among the great outdoors. For no matter whether you like your action soft or extreme, there’s something for everyone in the wide, open spaces – from a surfing safari in California and Jeep rides through the Nevada desert to white-water rafting in West Virginia and hot- air ballooning over New Mexico.
ON YOUR BIKE Cycling is among the most popular activities. Bike trails are found throughout the country, particularly in national and state parks. Many old railway lines have also been turned into recreational paths. The Katy Trail State Park in Missouri, for example, is the longest ‘rails-to-trails’ project in the USA. It winds for more than 225 miles through several pretty country towns, while the 109-mile Mickelson Trail follows an old railroad through the Black Hills of South Dakota. You don’t even have to leave the
big cities to find an attractive cycling route: in San Francisco several bicycle rental shops are located close to Fisherman's Wharf – cyclists can follow the bayshore over The Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and catch the ferry back – while the Great Allegheny Passage is a 200-mile recreational path stretching from
Washington DC to Pittsburgh. Adrenalin junkies looking to
combine pedal power with more challenging terrain will find lots of exciting opportunities for mountain biking among magnificent scenery. The Utah resort of Moab claims to be the sport’s spiritual home.

WATER WAYS For those taking to the water, canoeing is also a great way to discover the USA’s rugged wilderness. The choice ranges
from leisurely kayaking along Florida creeks to a canoe expedition on the Mississippi to negotiating sea caves at La Jolla, near San Diego. The remote Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is only accessible by canoe. Covering over one million acres, it features 1,200 miles of canoe routes on hundreds of lakes and rivers. Kayaking is also the best way to
see much of the eight vast national parks in Alaska.

The USA is a sport's fan's dream destination! Most major cities have at least one major league professional sports team and in cities like Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago you can take your pick from watching baseball, basketball, American football or ice hockey. Due to the fact that each season baseball teams play over 160 games, tickets for the 'ball park' are usually easier to come by. Tickets are available through several UK tour operators and attraction ticket specialists
