ICONIC ROADS Perhaps the most famous road of all was the iconic Route 66, which cut through the US heartland from Chicago to California. More than 2,400 miles of pure Americana, it was dubbed the Mother Road and the Main Street of America. The highway is a 113-mile series of roads and bridges that stretch from the Florida mainland all the way down to the most southernmost point in the USA – Key West. As you drive down from Key Largo to Key West you can still see the remnants of old railroad bridges of the Florida East Coast Railway. Finished in 1912, much of the railway was destroyed by a hurricane in 1936. In later years workers converted the rails to highways.

Among the biggest is the International Route 66 Mother Road Festival in Springfield,
Illinois, every September. Other iconic roads include
