THOUGHT [CONTINUED FROMPAGE 83] respect for the service of vet-
erans. It would ensure that those who make, enforce, and judge our nation’s laws would have first-hand knowledge of the joys, hardships, challenges, and honor of serving in uniform to defend America. It would also broaden membership of our armed forces by drawing tal- ented citizens who in recent years have shunned military service. Pres- tigious universities, especially those that closed their ROTC units in the late ’60s and early ’70s, might recon- sider their Vietnam-era decisions in order to give their students a chance to compete for commissions. And think of the galvanic effect that this amendment would have on generations of young Americans who would know that they and their leaders had shared experi- ences of life in uniform in defense of our nation.
