CAP II CLIPBOARD Six Hours
The impact of IMPACT can change your coaching outlook by BJ LeRoy
Six hours? I have to take a class to coach volleyball? My club direc- tor is insane. I’ve been playing since I was 12, I know what I’m doing. I’m just a volunteer! She’s really going to make me miss next week’s practice for a stupid class? We need practice, not lectures…I gotta get out of this! It’s way too early on Saturday morning. If this class was shorter, we could start later. At least we’re in the gym and there are 30 other people being tortured.
That must be the instructor. What a cool USA
Volleyball jacket…wonder if she knows anyone famous? Please don’t be boring, please don’t be boring…
No more pepper? No more hitting lines? How the heck are we supposed to warm up? OK…her 17s could do the drills. I have 14s!
No WAY my players can do that stuff. I need some more athletes if we’re going to win any- thing. You can’t teach height. We’re seriously supposed to just play games to get better? I need a drill book. At least they described the skills in the back of the book. Who is Bullwinkle?
And all that talk about anorexia and eating disorders... I don’t know anyone with those prob- lems. There was that one girl I played with who never brought lunch to tournaments. She wasn’t THAT thin…wonder why she quit? She just never got in shape, couldn’t keep up in practice... too bad, she was nice.
At least our coaches and players are the same sex and we don’t have to worry about harassment issues…
Three matches into our fi rst tournament and we haven’t won a single game. We’re so CLOSE! Why don’t the players care when we lose? How do I make them care? Why do I care? We need more practice time. Our practices need to be better. The players can make a hun- dred serves in a row during practice but they can’t serve one in a row during the game? How can I teach them to make the FIRST serve?!?!? Ugh, PARENTS! I’m no coaching expert people, quit bugging me. I want to win too! Wait, we talked about parents at IMPACT…wasn’t there a Parent Code of Behavior? She said I could print this and hand it out to the parents…we’ll see what happens. I have to get them on my side.
Season over…I can’t believe how much fun we had even though we
didn’t win many games. The kids are all coming back next year…we must have done something right! Wow… new year, new team, new level. I’ve got to play more games with them this year. Our practices were too boring last year. All I ever hear is “Coach, when do we get to…” We need more game time. We can’t score two points in a row. How can we learn to keep the serve more than one play? We talked about that in IMPACT…clean games? No…
“Dear Coach Kessel, if the reserves beat the starters in practice, should I start the reserves in our next match?” We fi nally won a tournament! I can’t believe some of these kids

never got a medal before. It was awesome how excited they were. How do we move up a level? Are there other levels? I need help. Power league is WAY different than regional events. How do I get a hold of that IMPACT teacher? Seemed like she knew more about this. I need to know more too! Five years and I still haven’t gone to Nationals. All these other coaches were coaching when I played, how can I beat them? What are they doing that I’m not? Two days of CAP training and I’m
fl oored…I didn’t know ANYTHING before. There is so much to learn. But seriously… write a paper? On volleyball? I love coaching, but with a family, it’s hard to manage…how do I get organized? Where’s my IMPACT manual? We talked about pre-season planning. Maybe I can work it out.
“Hey you guys, give that First Touch back to my kids!” High schoolers will do anything to get out of practice, but stealing a ball from a fi ve year old? It IS fun to play with. Maybe little kids CAN play volley- ball…
If I don’t take over this club, my own kid
isn’t going to have anywhere to play. I’ve got to keep it going. I can get some of my old players to be the coaches. At least I’ll know what they are teaching, since they learned it all from me. Ha. I get to send THEM to IMPACT. Ha! They are gonna love me… Our fi rst nationals bid! MAN that ice shower was COLD!
Never thought I’d read the Code of Ethics…sure am grateful for background checks. We almost hired that guy…I know him! Or, I thought I did…
Three years in a row at nationals…never would have thought… Traveling is sure
easier with good chaperones. Is it my imagination or are the parents getting younger?
Another local club, started by another “kid” I coached. There are so many good options for local kids to play. Amazing how many of my former players still love it. High Performance is a blast! Can’t believe the Olympic coaches are right here, talking to us…
Over 20 years in coaching…I still love it too. I can’t believe my own kids are coaching! It’s strange hearing them say the things I used to say to them. I guess it made an impression.
How did that saying go? One mother teaches a hundred teachers? I taught a few mothers alright… I can’t believe my region wants me to teach IMPACT. I remember my IMPACT class…I thought I knew it all. Didn’t want to go. And I’m still referring to that book. I HAVE to transfer all the notes I took to the new instructor’s manual.
My instructor was so good…I hope I’m not boring! Where can I get a cool USA Volleyball jacket? How can I teach all this material in only 6 hours?
