In the title match, Hamiter started the fi rst
three sets with Holloway, Brenda Maymon (Charlestown, Ind.), Heather Erickson (Fay- etteville, N.C.), Monique Burkland (Ardmore, Okla.), Allison Aldrich (Schuyler, Neb.), Nichole Millage (Champaign, Ill.) and libero Miller. Kaleo Kanahele (Oklahoma City, Okla.) subbed in the second and third sets and started for Maymon. Holloway led the team with 33 of its 85 points off of a match-high 29 kills. The event was about much more than just the numbers. Kendra Lancaster, an out- side hitter as well as the team captain, almost missed the Games after surviving a serious car accident that left her sidelined almost a year. She was moved by the experience. “These Games meant a lot to me personally because of what I had been through in the last year with my accident,” she said. “Being able to be in London with my team was the driving force in my recovery, everything revolved around my being able to play volleyball again. This team means everything to me and missing out on the

London Games was never an option.” Lancaster, who was born without a left arm and participated in three Paralympic Games, said the spirit of the team kept her motivated to battle through her recent challenges. “I think the whole experience has taught me a lot about my value as a leader and captain to my teammates (off the court especially, given the circumstances), something that will help me in the future with the team as we continue to train and work toward being a gold medal team.”
