Put a ring on it: Kwan says yes!

Michelle Kwan is engaged. Figure skating’s most decorated athlete is en-

gaged to 30-year-old Clay Pell, director of strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House. “It was a simple decision and it made sense;

that’s what’s so exciting to me,” Kwan told People magazine. “We are working together as a team, like in [pairs skating].” Pell proposed on Block Island, off the coast

of Rhode Island. Several years ago, Kwan was appointed to

serve in the State Department as a U.S. public diplomacy ambassador. Pell is the grandson of the late Rhode Island Sen. Claiborne Pell, who established Pell Grants for college 40 years ago. Pell accompanied Kwan to her U.S. Hall of Fame induction in San Jose last January.

Figure Skating Series events this fall (Cup of China and NHK Tro- phy) before competing at the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skat- ing Championships in January. Rippon is the only man to win back-to-back World Junior ti- tles (2008–09) and is the 2008 U.S. junior champion and the 2010 Four Continents champion. He has previously worked with coaches Ghislain Briand, Brian Orser, Nikoli Morozov and Yelena Sergeeva.
