Lysacek announces return to competition Olympic champion Evan Lysacek announced in August on NBC’s “TODAY” his plans to return to
competition after a two-season layoff . He is set to compete at 2012 Hilton HHonors Skate America, the opening event of the Grand Prix Series. Lysacek, 2009 World champion and two-time U.S. titlist, will
compete for the fi rst time since earning the 2010 Olympic title in Vancouver. He continues to train with longtime coach Frank Car- roll.
“I am returning to competitive skating with the ultimate goal
of representing the U.S. at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and successfully defending my Olympic title,” Lysacek said. “I’m excited that my fi rst competition back will be at Skate Ameri- ca. Kicking off my return on home soil will make it even sweeter.” Skate America will take place Oct. 19–21, at the ShoWare
Center in Seattle/Kent, Wash. Since winning the seventh men’s Olympic title in
U.S. history, Lysacek has garnered honors, includ- ing being named the 2010 USOC SportsMan of the Year and receiving the 2010 Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the U.S. In April, Ly- sacek was appointed a sports envoy by the U.S. Department of State, a position in which he en- gages overseas youth in positive dialogue on the importance of education, positive health practices and respect for diversity. In 2010, Lysacek was runner-up on the 10th
season of “Dancing with the Stars” and served as a spokesman for U.S. Figure Skating’s highly acclaimed fi lm RISE. He has participated in do- mestic and international skating shows, made numerous TV and red carpet appearances and participated in several philanthropic events since his last competition.
Marley and Brubaker end partnership Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker, the U.S.
silver medalists in pairs, have ended their two-sea- son partnership. Marley is stepping away from competitive skating, while Brubaker plans to con- tinue his fi gure skating career, although he will sit out this season. The duo trained in Aliso Viejo, Calif., under coaches Jenni Meno and Todd Sand. “I would like to wish Mary Beth all the best. I en-
joyed our success together as well as the journey that got us here,” Brubaker said. “My number-one goal is to make the U.S. Olympic Team. At this time, I will continue to pursue my goal of qualifying for the 2014 Olympics and will be exploring all options.” Marley and Brubaker earned a spot on the med- al stand in their fi rst trip to the U.S. Championships in 2011, garnering the pewter medal. They fi nished their fi rst season with an eighth-place showing at the 2011 Four Continents Championships. Their most recent season included a seventh-place showing at 2011 Hilton HHonors Skate America
and a silver-medal fi nish at the 2012 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships. They won their fi rst major international medal, the bronze, at the 2012 Four Continents Championships and placed 10th at the 2012 World Championships. “Rockne and I have had an amazing journey together and achieved great success in a short time. I wish him the best,” Marley said. “He has added so much to my development as a skater and a person. I will cherish our time together as a team.” The duo was slated to make two appearances this fall on the 2012 ISU Grand Prix Series, at Skate
Canada and NHK Trophy, before competing at the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January. Marley has also skated singles at the national level, winning the novice silver medal at the 2009 U.S. Championships. Brubaker is a two-time U.S. pairs champion with former partner Keauna McLaughlin.
