HERE IS no doubt that the pace of change brought about by new technologies has had a significant effect on the way people live, work
and play worldwide. New and emerging technologies are challenging the traditional processes of teaching and learning, and the way education is managed. At Salisbury Cathedral School, we are committed to embracing the opportunities this brings. As part of our ICT strategy, we had been
seeking a more seamless integration of ICT across our entire curriculum. Traditionally, ICT has been taught through the use of a suite of computers, which always leads to the mantra from pupils, “We’re doing computers now”. What we needed was some way of using ICT across the whole school and in any lesson, in an instant.
The iPad can be
research library, history archive, language lab, art canvas, music studio and video editing suite – all rolled into one neat device. Over the last year, the school has trialled an iPad in the science department where pupils
have used it to film and edit documentaries as a way to summarise a topic. The iPad has also been used for quick internet research, as a sound wave analyser, a camera and as a mini drum kit for our Rock Band Club. Pupils find this technology highly engaging
and use it in creative ways. There are so many amazing apps out there that can really enhance teaching and learning, not to mention the increasing number of textbooks that are beginning to appear in iBooks. In our recent inspection, the inspectors
were extremely impressed with how engaged the pupils were using this technology, mentioning it several times in their feedback. From September, with our investment in
67 new iPads, all students in our two oldest year groups will be able to benefit and the devices will also be used by staff. As the school has gone wireless throughout the site, they will be able to use the iPads wherever they are, benefiting from this revolutionary technology in all their lessons.
