Canford’s girls quads make rowing history
AT THE Head of the River in London in March, Canford’s 1st VIII won, to become among the top 10 fastest boats in the country in their category at that stage of the season. The girls’ quadruple sculls gained bronze
at this event, and added gold in May at the Wallingford regatta to win The Yeatman Cup. At the National Schools’ Regatta in
Nottingham in June, the girls’ quadruple sculls won the championship event and set a new course record, while the J15 boys VIII won bronze. The boys’ 1st VIII and the girls’ quads
qualified for the Henley Royal Regatta in July. The boys won their first heat but lost by half a length to a strong Belmont, USA boat in the early rounds. However, the girls’ excellent performances gained them a place in the final, with winning form against
Tideway Scullers and Nottingham Rowing Club. Although they were runners up to a strong Henley Rowing Club boat in the final itself, this was a wonderful achievement for Canford’s school rowing quad. The girls’ quads also made history as one crew member, Lauren Fry, was the lightest

Exciting times
THIS IS an exciting time for St Mary’s School in Shaftesbury. The sixth form is flourishing and “progress at A-level is exceptional”, according to the recent ISI report. King’s careers
KING’S SCHOOL, Bruton held its fourth annual careers convention in June, enabling students to listen to inspiring career advice about jobs from banking to the Foreign Office and film-making. The keynote speech was given by
Rachel Bell, the founder of PR agency Shine Communications, named the best employer in The Sunday Times. She told the students how she had left school at 16 with three GCSEs and, through hard work, had been named the best company leader in The Sunday Times – the first woman ever to achieve this. Other speakers included former Daily
Express editor Richard Addis. Students also heard from Andrew Curtis, film producer and founder of media law firm Drew and Co, who explained the importance of having a back-up plan.
