HE TERM ÔLABIAPLASTYÕ IS CURRENTLY USED TO DESCRIBE A NUMBER OF procedures used to change the appearance of the structures surrounding the vestibule of the vulva. These procedures most commonly refer to reduction of the size and/or change of the shape of the labia minora, the labia majora and the clitoral hood, as well as lifting of the clitoris and removal of hymenal remnants or perineal skin tags. The indications for the procedure may include congenital

defects, as well as cosmetic enhancement following stretching as a result of childbirth, weight-loss and ageing. There is some controversy with regard to the use of the term of Ô labia minora hypertrophyÕ , as

there is little information available concerning the dimensions of these structures ® other than the fact that there is considerable variation in presentation. As a result, there is no standardised method for grading the degree of labia minora hypertrophy and subsequently, no algorithm for surgical intervention. Furthermore, there is a wide variation in womenÕs perceptions of the ideal genital body image, especially when taking into consideration racial/ethnic and cultural influences. The most common complaint is that in the standing position the labia minora may protrude too

much below the labia majora, causing embarrassment and low self-esteem. Women who pursue the beautification of the genital area with cosmetic surgery are often

criticised. It has been suggested that they wish to acquire a flat vulva similar to the pre-pubescent aesthetic seen in pornography and commercial advertisements. Unfortunately psychological studies that investigate the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in women seeking labiaplasty are lacking. In Western society, the layman opponents of religiously and culturally motivated cutting of

parts of the vulva use the terms Ôfemale genital mutilation or circumcisionÕ interchangeably with labiaplasty. The few reports that exist about patient satisfaction after labia reduction surgery are generally positive, but rather short term. In the UK, the increased demand for labiaplasty was indicated by the NHS performing double

the number of procedures in 2006 than previously reported in 2001–2005; while the official World Health Organization (WHO) resolution allows for the woman and her plastic surgeon to resolve the semantic ambiguity within the exclusive context of the doctorÐ patient relationship.
