Multiple Perils Hail damage causes most insured losses from convective storms, and mitigation can help.

“A convective storm is somewhat of a conglomeration of multiple perils.”

Erik Nikodem, Lexington Insurance

Convective storms can produce tornadoes, hail, straight-line winds and flash flooding. About 60% of the insured loss from convective storms comes in the form of hail damage. While it may appear that there is little property owners can do to help mitigate direct damage from a powerful tornado, they can take steps to protect their assets from the much more common risk of hail damage. Routine maintenance of buildings, especially roofs, tops the list. There are also property specific risk mitigation steps. An auto dealership, for example, can use hail nets to protect cars in an exposed lot.
