SHORT BREAKS selling & HOLIDAYS
thisissue
It’s diffi cult to recall a more miserable summer than this one, but the near-constant rain and washed out sporting
events might just provide a silver lining for tour operators. Certainly several agents I’ve spoken to
are anticipating a deluge of late bookings, particularly as many families had their half-term ‘staycations’ ruined. But where will their clients be booking? According to Travelodge, which surveyed 5,000
British adults in June to investigate their summer holiday intentions, this will still be the year of the staycation, with Cornwall, the Lake District and Edinburgh the most likely popular choices. Its research showed that 41% of Britons intend to holiday at home this year – that’s up 6% on last year. However, perhaps almost a month of rain
might change a few intentions. Several other pieces of research highlights that even in diffi cult fi nancial times, Britons will make the necessary sacrifi ces in order to have a summer break – and the weather might just prompt them to look beyond the UK’s sodden fi elds and mud-caked outdoor concert venues.
In this issue we’ve got some great suggestions for further afi eld – like perennial favourites The Canary Islands (p20) and Malta (p28), with their mix of guaranteed sunshine (remember what that is?), beaches, excellent range of accommodation and cuisine. But also consider Serbia (p24), Eastern Europe’s ‘hottest’ destination led by vibrant Belgrade, and the Czech Republic (p10), which offers plenty of reasons to venture beyond its popular capital, Prague.
Enjoy London’s Olympics but be prepared for a late-summer dash for the booking line.
