ParkWord July 2012 Seasonal events such as Hallowe’en and
Christmas have become important for many theme parks and attractions around the world, encouraging repeat business outside of what would traditionally have been peak season. Yet none of this means you should get complacent over the summer months. Adhering to the maxim that you should make hay while the sun shines, a number of parks in southern Europe have been holding special events recently to celebrate summer. In Spain, PortAventura was due to stage its first ever ‘White Night’ on Saturday, June 30. The event marked the start of the park’s summer season and featured an extended opening from 10pm right through until 4am. As well as various rides, attractions and restaurants, guests could also enjoy special musical performances and even a foam party. Tickets for the after dark session were available for €15, while guests who had entered the park earlier in the day could stay for free. The summer season continues until September 1. In Italy, Gardaland guests can enjoy extended opening until 11pm every night until September 9. To launch the ‘Night is Magic’ season, the park staged a DJ party on June 15. An evening ticket, valid from 6pm, was offered for €16. A pass allowing evening access all summer is now on sale for €51. Meanwhile at Mirabilandia, entry to the park was available for just €6 to anywhere wearing pink as part of the ‘Notte Rosa’ (Pink Night) celebrations on July 7.
Of course one of the reasons attractions in this part of the world can stay open so late is due to the climate, however for many Italian operators summer 2012 has been a long time coming. During my visit to Mirabilandia last month to see Divertical, the park’s huge new water coaster, I was informed that April and May had witnessed 33 days of rain. I don’t think that’s the kind of soaking guests were expecting.
