The proposed new reservoir will be similar in size to the existing one at Cheddar

Veolia to supply Esholt Solutions

VEOLIA WATER

& Technologies has won a contract for the supply of its Biothelys thermal hydrolysis technology to Yorkshire Wa- ter’s Esholt WwTW.

The Esholt works has oper- ated a sewage sludge incinera- tor for years, but Yorkshire Water is adopting a more sustainable route for sludge treatment and disposal. The Esholt Bioenergy Pro-

ject is being engineered and delivered by MGJV.

The thermal hydrolysis pro- Arup has plans for Cheddar

BRISTOL WATER has selected Arup as lead planning con- sultant as it takes its plans for a major new reservoir in Cheddar, Somerset, to the next stage. Arup will support Bristol Water in developing the optimum engineering so- lution, organising a public engagement campaign and preparing for a planning ap- plication to Sedgemoor Dis- trict Council as the relevant planning authority.

A comprehensive process of consultation is now planned

with the local community, rel- evant stakeholders and statu- tory local authorities over the next two years, with the plan- ning application submitted in December 2013. Arup

previously advised

Bristol Water during the rig- orous site selection process, assessing the feasibility of a number of sites around Som- erset. The consultancy firm also launched studies to en- sure that the Cheddar Springs source would be adequate to fill the new reservoir and con-

tinue to supply the existing reservoir

The proposed new reservoir is located to the south of the existing Cheddar reservoir, and will be similar in size, with approximate capacity of 6,000Ml.

Wayne Dyer, Arup’s associ-

ate director and planning ex- pert, stated his delight at the firm’s appointment after hav- ing carried out the original site selection study in 2011. “I am pleased to be in- in

volved a major project

which aims to safeguard a reliable and affordable water supply for future generations. As a local resident of Somer- set I am also looking forward to the opportunity this project provides for Arup to demon- strate its ability for creative and sensitive design in one of the most picturesque and sen- sitive landscapes in the South West.”

Bristol Water is committed to realising its long-term aim of building a new raw water reservoir in Somerset.

cess breaks down the struc- ture of sewage sludge prior to anaerobic digestion resulting in a significantly increased biogas yield. At Esholt this biogas is fed to a combined

the to earn

heat and power (CHP) plant to produce “green” electricity and heat. The electricity grid

is fed into Renew-

able Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for Yorkshire Water as part of their commitment to reduce Carbon footprint, and the waste heat is re-used by the process.

The Esholt plant, due for completion in 2013, will be the largest so far with a design sludge throughput of 30,000 tonnes of dry solids annually. Digestion will generate a sufficient amount of biogas to run a 4.4MW combined heat and power plant producing about 33GW of electricity per year.

NG BAILEY’S industry-leading Offsite Manufacture division has won a contract to pro- vide two water booster sta- tions for Anglian Water. The fresh water pumping stations will be pre-commissioned and delivered as a packaged solu- tion and will form part of a UK-wide drive to supplement areas of drought in the UK. Lee Horton, general man- ager of NG Bailey’s Offsite Manufacture division, said:

A boost for Bailey’s “By

manufacturing

offsite,

the pumping stations will be operational significantly faster and 30% more cost effectively than a traditional on site build, a benefit to An- glian Water, who are running to strict time-constraints and within a restrictive budget. “They require a solution that can be built, delivered, installed, commissioned and up and running within a short time frame.”
