WaterButt Wheelie bins: water use

Olympic torch shines for Atkins super mum Lucy

ATKINS FLOOD defence engineer and super mum Lucy Willis realised a burning ambition recently when she completed the 136th leg of the Olympic Torch relay in Bristol. Lucy was nominated by

her work col-

leagues for raising £20,000 for CLIC Sargent, the UK can- cer charity for chil- dren and young peo- ple.

Lucy carried the

Olympic Flame for her six-year-old daughter Lola, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia two years ago.

Speaking after her relay stint, Lucy said: “I

am so honoured. It was incredible to kiss Lola holding the flame! I can’t believe how many people were watching and I am so grateful to have been nominated by my Atkins’ col- leagues!”

As the official engineering and design ser- vices provider for the London 2012 Games,

Plumbers: plan for Games CONTINUING WITH Olym-

pics fever, with the remaining tickets for the Olympics and Paralympics now on sale, it’s getting tickets of another kind that jobbing plumb- ers and heating engineers are worried about while the Games are on.

Gold medal effort: Lucy and Lola take centre stage with the Olympic torch

Atkins was given the opportunity to nominate two colleagues to carry the Olympic Flame during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Re- lay. Nominees had to have inspiring personal best stories which demonstrated outstanding contributions to their local communities.

With access and park- ing restrictions being put in place around Olympic and Paralympic venues, if they get called out to an emergency job, there’s a good chance their normal route will be diverted or they will risk the chance of picking up a park- ing ticket.

But help is on hand with Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumb-

ing & Heating Engineering, offering the following advice. “If your normal call out area is in the vicinity of Olym- pic and Paralympic venues, you will need to plan ahead. Don’t forget that the Games are taking place all over the UK, not just in east London, with venues covering many parts of London, Weymouth & Portland, Windsor& Eton, Hadleigh & Leigh-on-Sea, Cheshunt & Waltham Cross, Sevenoaks, Newcastle, Man- chester, Cardiff, Glasgow, Coventry and Surrey.

“Explain to customers up front you may be late due to traffic and give yourself more time in-between jobs to travel between A-Z.”

Old bins go to allotment

BRISTOL WATER and May Gurney teamed-up with Bris- tol City Council (BCC) re- cently to help allotment users across Bristol become more water efficient by using con- verted redundant wheelie bins.

May Gurney, the waste contractor across the city, in- troduced new recycling prac- tices when it took over which meant it gave households smaller refuse bins, leaving redundant bins with no ob- vious use. Bristol Water sug- gested that by installing a tap they could be used for rain- water harvesting, which BCC thought was a perfect idea for use on allotments.

Last month, the council threw a party to celebrate food growing in Bristol at Thingwalls allotment site where the Wheelie Bin ini- tiative was launched. Bristol Water provided 700 taps and visitors could decorate a bin for use on their allotment site, or even for home use.
