Costain and Severn in new joint venture

COSTAIN AND Severn Trent have joined forces in a new joint venture to provide complete business water and wastewater management ser- vices to high volume com- mercial and industrial water users in England, Scotland and Wales.

The two companies are combining parts of their ex- isting operations within the joint venture, in which Cos- tain will have an initial 40% stake. Costain is contribut- ing most of its water hygiene testing business, while Severn Trent’s contribution involves its UK non-regulated, asset operation & maintenance, water hygiene, developer ser- vices and Design Build Oper- ate (DBO).

Called Severn Trent Cos- tain (STC), the joint venture, offers large multisite users

a single supplier for all their water and wastewater re- quirements, from source to disposal. It will help custom- ers improve efficiencies, lever- age cost savings, manage legal compliance and risk manage- ment issues, and resolve water efficiency challenges.

STC builds on an existing joint venture between Costain and Severn Trent Services, which delivers one of the larg- est Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contracts in Europe to the Ministry of Defence and which involves operating and maintaining more than 5,000 assets and 1,500 sites. Costain said that with the UK water supply market un- dergoing

significant change

as Government legislation drives increased business re- tail competition, STC will be at the forefront of these

changes and providing an opportunity for customers to buy their water from a single national supplier.

Andrew Wylie, chief execu- tive of Costain, said: “Severn Trent Costain will help cus- tomers to manage their water and waste water usage in the most efficient, compliant and cost-effective way. Increasing- ly, customers are looking for a single expert provider who can help plan and manage their in- dustrial water and waste water use across the full cycle.” Tony Wray, chief executive of Severn Trent said: “We are delighted to be working with Costain on this new joint ven- ture. Costain is a long-term partner of Severn Trent Ser- vices and together we have already established a track record for successful delivery in the UK.”

B&V wins Go to Green work

DWR CYMRU Welsh Water’s (DCWW) has picked Black & Veatch to be the main con- tractor for its £97.4M Go to Green programme to in- crease water treatment works’ (WTW) resilience and en- hance water quality for com- munities throughout Wales. The programme covers both design and construction ser- vices.

News of the Go to Green programme came as DCWW will spend £1B over the next three years on infrastructure

projects across Wales, Her- efordshire and Deeside. The programme includes £100M of additional investment in projects that were not origi- nally earmarked for the cur- rent AMP5 regulatory invest- ment cycle.

Go to Green is an expan- sion of Welsh Water’s AMP5 water

quality programme. The initiative includes a range of improvements across 12 WTWs. The scope includes design and construction of new WTWs, expansion and

refurbishment of existing works, and control system upgrades.

Black & Veatch is respon- sible for design, procurement, construction and commis- sioning of the improvements under a collaborative delivery model. All of the projects en- compassed by Go to Green have been combined into a single programme of work. By packaging the improve- ments in this way DCWW has increased the opportunity to create savings.

Veolia sells regulated division

VEOLIA ENVIRONNEMENT has sold a majority stake in its UK regulated water activities − Veolia Water Central, East and Southeast − to acquisi- tion entity Rift Acquisitions for £1.24B. The group has retained a 10% shareholding as part of the deal as well as Veolia Water Outsourcing, a leading provider of

out-

sourced services to the UK water industry. The sale will help Veolia reduce its net debt by nearly £1.2B, as the group contin-

ues a €5B asset divestment programme. The divestment plan focuses on three divi- sions: Water, Environmental Services and Energy Services, with a recomposition of the Veolia Transdev sharehold- ing in conjunction with the Caisse des Dépôts.

Olivier Bret, Veolia Water CEO, said: “The UK sector is a strategically important mar- ket for Veolia Environnement and the group is committed to continuing the growth of Veolia Water and the Veolia

Water Solutions & Technolo- gies division in the UK. “Selling the majority stake

in our regulated water assets will bring Veolia Water UK in line with the Veolia Envi- ronnement operating model and enable

multidivisional

environmental service offer- ings combining our group expertise in water, waste and energy. This will allow us to achieve our key ambitions for continued growth and service provision in the outsourcing arena.”

TOUGH ENOUGH

Debris and rag can cause havoc in sewage streams. Lose the fight against blocked pumps and you’ll take a hit for disruption and downtime.

Choose a pump which is tough enough to withstand the challenges of solids pumping and you can win the battle.

VAUGHAN Chopper pumps are tough enough because they are designed and built to handle the solids and debris that knock-out other types of pump.

SCOTTISH WATER’S £34M project to pro- vide a new wastewa- ter system in Dunoon, and protect the natu- ral environment of the Firth of Clyde, has of- ficially opened. The new system,

which includes a new wastewater treatment works at Bullwood just outside Dunoon, has ended the discharg- ing of untreated, un- screened wastewater into the Clyde and Holy Loch. Before Scottish Water’s investment, most

of the old system discharged untreated, un- screened flows into the Firth of Clyde and Holy Loch. The new scheme removed a large number of untreated sewage discharges and provid-

ed a biological (secondary) treatment pro- cess at a new wastewater treatment works at the site of the former Bullwood Quarry just to the south of Dunoon and a chain of seven pumping stations which pump sew- age from the head of the Holy Loch to the new WwTW.
