ACWA SAYS its robust Ni- treat system “is proving to be the nitrate treatment system of choice” for water compa- nies in AMP5, having provid- ed textbook demonstrations of its value in many successful AMP4 projects,


In total, 14 plants were in- stalled and went into opera- tion during AMP4, treating nearly 160MLD of wastewa- ter at key sites for Thames Water, Anglian Water and Yorkshire Water.


Now in AMP5, the com- pany has already won orders for nine Nitreat treatment plants designed to treat near- ly 100MLD. These will be installed during the remain- der of the period, again for Anglian Water and Thames Water, as well as new Nitreat customers Severn Trent Wa- ter and Cambridge Water. To date, this represents a remarkable 90% of the new sites for AMP5. Further sig- nificant contracts currently under consideration are likely to improve on this exemplary performance. Nitreat’s key advantage is that it is based on true counter current con- tinuous ion exchange, using a multiport valve for distrib-

uting feed and regenerating flows to multiple resin ves- sels. Unlike similar systems, Nitreat does not require a turntable – the resin vessels remain stationary, and reli- ably reduce nitrate concentra- tions to below 5mg/l as NO3. ACWA developed a stand- ard modular design for the @ One Alliance, the collabora- tive organisation delivering around half of Anglian Wa- ter’s AMP5 capital invest- ment programme.


This system can be used at any site, and incorporates two ion exchange skids that can handle 100% of flows and plant maintenance, elimi- nating downtime. The tech- nology can cope with large variations in flow and nitrate levels, and produces far less


waste regenerant than con- ventional plants. @One Al- liance has an ambitious sus- tainability target of achieving a 20% reduction in opera- tional carbon and a 50% re- duction in embedded carbon, which is inherent in buildings and systems, as well as 20% cost efficiencies. Bob Hastings, of ACWA, said: “Nitreat has proved such a reliable, low-cost and low-carbon way to effectively reduce nitrate that it is fast becoming the standard tech- nology for water companies with treatment works in sen- sitive areas that have to both meet demanding cost effi- ciency objectives and rigorous regulatory discharge limits.”

AT THE end of wastewater treatment, sewage sludge wa- ter content is about 99% of the raw matter. Reducing the mass to handle avoiding dust and improving quality are the primary issues of the valorisa- tion and the recycling of sew- age sludge.


Treatment can occur by reducing its water content, notably through drying. By evaporation, sewage sludge loses all or part of its water and becomes solid.


The technique of drying beds is done outdoors on liq- uid sludge and combines nat- ural evaporation and free wa- ter drainage through a filter layer of sand and gravel. This


extensive system, depending on weather conditions, gets the solid sludge to 35-40% of dry content.


Thermal drying allows vir- tual elimination of water (dry content around 95%). The resulting sludge is either pow- der or granules/pellets. Ther- mal drying should develop in the coming years as other systems for sludge treatment, including incineration, are more expensive as a result of new regulatory and economic conditions. The oven dry method is the reference test to measure sludge water content, but it is costly and time consuming. Designed for instant and


reliable measurements on site, the moisture meter for sewage sludge, marketed by Domos- ystem, is calibrated according to the oven dry method. Fit- ted with a measuring cham- ber, the new moisture meter allows to measure water con- tent and temperature of sew- age sludge granules/pellets. Domosystem said the user


can also create his own cali- brations. The user weighs the sample they have poured in the measuring chamber, and selects one of the available calibrations and adjusts the weight of the sample to the se- lected calibration curve. The precise moisture content and temperature display instantly.


Air Jet aids aeration process


LANDIA HAS helped a soft drinks manufacturer achieve exemplary standards in its treatment and discharge of effluent. Its DG-I 80 Air Jet was installed in the final ef- fluent tank before discharge to reed beds.


Mounted on a tubular stainless steel frame in a bu- tyl-lined above ground store, the 3kW Landia Air Jet trans- fers oxygen into the liquid to


start and aid the biological process, cleaning the waste- water and keeping solids in suspension for treatment fur- ther along the process. Landia’s Paul Davies said: “This business takes its en- vironmental responsibilities very seriously indeed, so were keen to develop a relation- ship with Landia whereby the best possible wastewa- ter treatment solution could


be reached, with us providing proper back-up and hands- on help.”


A spokesperson for the soft drinks manufacturer added: “The Landia equipment is proving ideal for our final aeration process − and the support we’ve received in fine-tuning the system has far exceeded our expectations.”

The design of the MSU:10 into a single complete unit al- lows for transportation by a standard six yard skip vehicle. This design removes the need for expensive crane lifts and associated lift specific risk as- sessments and method state- ments, reduces transportation costs and ensures a quick set up on location.


The MSU:10 has been de- signed to ensure operating costs are kept to a minimum with a generator of no more


than 40Kva required to run the unit. As with the larger models in the S:Max range, the unit is supplied pre-wired and fitted with its own control panel, isolator and electrical sockets for easy connection to a power source. The portable nature of the MSU:10 model makes it the first of its kind in the industry and a significant development
