Another function is XpertSteer Probe Articulation, providing the operator “improved sensitivity for accessing defects,” she said. When the operator stops steering, the probe stops moving, preventing overshooting. It also has a “bump steering” feature that allows the joystick to move the probe at very small increments for better defect visibility. XpertVision “rounds out the suite of features,” she said. This is an optional battery-operated 6.5-inch monitor that can be used either by a second inspector or a group of people who need to see what is being inspected. The integrated monitor on the probe itself is 3.7 inches.
The XL GO+ system was launched this past February. GE has also developed a new 3D Phase Measurements system with optical tips and probe that capture a three-dimensional surface scan of the object. “This does not run on the XL GO+, but is a new technology that is on the XLG3 platform,” Stancato said. “It has become particularly popular in aviation in that it has to do with tip to shroud measurement, more accurate shroud measurements.”
She also noted that with 3D Phase Measurement, the user can have one tip that is both a general viewing tip to do the inspection as well the measurement. “One of the things we’ve heard from the field was that the customer would find a fault, then have to pull the probe out to put on the measurement tip, then put the probe back in and try to that fault again. The 3D Phase Measurement allows the use of a single tip.” The 3D Phase Measurement was launched in mid-2011. Also announced in March 2011 was a new shaft diameter for the XLG3 that has a working channel for retrieval of small parts found during inspections. AM
