From the Field: Yuma (Ariz.) Chapter Yuma Chapter members are fostering patriotism at O.C. Johnson Elemen- tary School in Yuma. The chapter purchased a new U.S. flag to replace the school’s worn and tattered one. While at the school, Lt. Col. Nicholas Knight, USMC-Ret., taught children about the flag’s history and etiquette. In the past three years, students
have made 27 lap quilts that mem- bers have distributed to veterans in area nursing homes. Capt. Don Eskam, USMC-Ret., Yuma Chapter president, thanked students from
four participating classes and pre- sented each child with a certificate of appreciation. A special education class also received a certificate of ap- preciation for writing notes to veter- ans, thanking them for their service.
Tampa (Fla.) Chapter Tampa Chapter member Capt. Bob Silah, USN-Ret., was named a Light- ning Community Hero and received $50,000 from the Lightning Foun- dation Community Heroes program. Silah, who was honored at a Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game, donat- ed the money to Operation Helping Hand, which he has chaired since Tampa Chapter mem- bers founded it in 2004 to help wounded warriors being treated at the James A. Haley VA Hospital in
Tampa. View the video at http://bit .ly/HTIBk8.
Pine Tree (Maine) Chapter Members of the Pine Tree Chapter presented $1,500 scholarships — named after Maine native and Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Joshua Chamberlain — to Navy Midshipman Danielle McKnight and Army ROTC Cadet Orie Bartlett. Members also presented MOAA medals and certifi- cates to outstanding area ROTC and Junior ROTC students, while newly commissioned officers graduating from ROTC received their first sets of gold bars and complimentary MOAA memberships.
In addition, the chapter cohosts an annual pizza party and a weenie roast for ROTC cadets with the Navy League, allowing members to inter- act with future military officers.
