Specifically, on page 52 it is said that when the call for volunteers went out that “1,500 volunteers came from the mainland.” What is not said is that there were 19,000 males of military age available on the mainland and that 1,500 was only 7 percent of the available Japanese-American pool. states, “the [Military Intelligence Service (MIS)] interception of a mes- sage regarding Admiral Yamamoto’s flight plans allowed American fight- er planes to kill Yamamoto.” … The fact is that the Japanese-American MIS had nothing to do with either the interception or translation of the message or of the shoot-down of Yamamoto. The MIS was specifi- cally kept away from all code-break- ing activities for reasons of security. Yamamoto’s message was inter- cepted at FRUPAC [Fleet Radio Unit Pacific] in Honolulu, broken there, and translated by U.S. Marine Corps linguist Lt. Col. Alvah B. Lasswell. Page 75 notes that close to 200 members of the 442nd were lost dur- ing the six days fighting during relief of the so-called “Lost Battalion.” Ac- cording to regimental records, there were 117 [killed in action (KIAs)] for the entire month (not six days) of 442nd action, and that included other units as well. Finally, as to medals and awards:
On page 75 it [says] the [100th/442nd] received “More than 18,000 individ- ual decorations for bravery,” includ- ing “9,500 purple hearts.” The 1946 regimental history, issued more than one year after the end of World War II, discloses a total of only 3,915 indi- vidual awards, including 3,600 Purple Hearts. … As to Medals of Honor: Up to 1946, only one such had been
