Visiting a Novel in Texas
I
n 1836, 9-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker was snatched during a Comanche raid in Texas. She lived 34 years as Naduah, marrying a warrior and bearing
three children, including the renowned Quanah Parker (right). In Ride the Wind (Random House, 1982), author Lucia St. Clair Robson imagines a detailed picture of the captive’s life with “the People” — from their spiritual practices to making pemmican. As settlers invaded the Comanche lands, both sides became increasingly violent toward each other. Eventu- ally, Naduah and her young daughter were returned to her white family, but Naduah had to be locked up to pre- vent her from fleeing, and she wasted away and perished after her daughter’s death. As hunters killed off the bison and the U.S. Army slaughtered the Comanches’ horses, Quanah led the remnants of his tribe onto a reservation to prevent their starvation. In the following years, he be-
came a successful ranch- er and representative of American Indians and hunted with President Theodore Roosevelt. Today, Palo Duro
Canyon State Park (above), about 25 miles southeast of Amarillo, preserves one of the Comanches’ traditional hunting grounds with an interpretive center, cabins, camping, and hiking and rid- ing trails with horses available. Visit
