Unicorn was established in 2000. The six strong fund management team have racked up in excess of 120 years experience and have established a series of five-crown rated funds each underpinned by the input of an FE Alpha-rated manager.
The firm’s portfolios, with one exception, concentrate exclusively on UK listed securities, irrespective of their market capitalisation, using a bottom-up approach to understand the company.
Unicorn tends to find many of its opportunities in the small or mid-cap UK area, seeking good cash-generating companies operating in specialist niche markets.
The managers operate a buy and hold strategy. They avoid sectors that lack
balance sheet transparency such as mining, oil and gas, together with com- panies whose prospects are undermined by the prevailing economic climate.
Unusually its range of products includes a fund of investment trusts, which pro- vides global diversification and has a strong track record with a low FE risk score. The trust aims to take advantage of anomalous discount opportunities, using a similar bottom-up approach to the UK-focussed funds.
The firm is still relatively small, preferring to be the ‘best’ rather than the biggest. Its presence is certainly gaining support and its profile is increasing. Unicorn is majority owned by the directors and management, giving them complete autonomy over the investment process and an extra incentive to perform.
