Kwan honored for contributions during the Title IX era
Skating legend Michelle Kwan is one of 40 women who have made a sig- nificant impact on society after playing sports during the 40 years of the Title IX era, according to a list compiled by the Women’s Sports Foundation, in partnership with espnW and Women in Cable Telecommunications. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires schools and col-
leges receiving federal money in any education program or activity to pro- vide the same opportunities for girls as they provide for boys. Kwan, the most decorated athlete in U.S. Figure Skating history, made the distinguished list with her work as sports ambassador for Special Olympics, member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, and public diplomacy envoy for the U.S. State De- partment. Some of the more recognizable names on the list include soc-
cer great Mia Hamm, track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee, comedian Tina Fey and basketball coach Pat Summitt. Christine Brennan, who cov- ers figure skating for USA Today and has written three best-selling books on the sport, is on the list. The honorees will be recognized as part of a 40 FOR 40 event on June 21 at the JW Marriott hotel in Washington, DC. “We are proud to recognize these women and the positive
role that the passage of Title IX has played in the lives of countless women and girls,” said Kathryn Olson, chief executive officer of the Women’s Sports Foundation. “Each has used participation in sports as a step toward making a very significant contribution to society in a wide variety of fields.” According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, Title IX has result- ed in an increase in girls participating in high school sports from 1 in 27 in 1972 to about 2 in 5 today.
