WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Junior ladies champion Barbi Smith graced the cover of SKATING

magazine in March 1974.

ing periodic numbness and tin- gling in her limbs for years, Smith was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis about a decade ago. Now in touch with her skating friends,

Smith has been creating a new role for herself in skating as a writer for the Orlando, Fla., edition of the

Examiner. Her articles also run online. “I’m trying to get more local people involved in

skating,” said Smith, who is planning to go back to school in the fall to study broadcast production and digital media. “I’m

trying to get the word out that these rinks are here [in Florida] and it is something you should consider, because it’s so hot here. Can you think of a better way to cool off? I’m also trying to get people excited about watching competitive skating. “I’m really hopeful for skating,” she added. “Now as a grown woman with MS, I am increasingly grateful for skating and the huge role it played in my life. I sometimes dream about skating and can still remember how it felt. I try to convey that excitement in my articles.”

Thanks to social media, Barbi Smith now keeps in touch with all of her skating friends.
