ony UK’s real highlight of Q1 happened on the other side of the Atlantic with One Direction

debuting at one on the Billboard 200, but arguably back home compilations gave it most joy. The success of its Sixties female artists

compilation Be My Baby, the quarter’s most popular various artists title, helped to lift Sony’s share of the market to an 18-month high with 16.0%, good enough for second behind Universal. Sony has just one title each in the

quarter’s Top 10 singles and artist albums

charts with RCA act Kelly Clarkson leading the singles charge with Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) and Epic’s Olly Murs providing the major’s top album with In Case You Didn’t Know. Singles share dropped back year-on-year from a market share of 21.2% to 18.4%, but albums share rose from 15.2% to 16.3%, partly thanks to a release schedule which included new albums from Bruce Springsteen and Leonard Cohen and

ongoing sales of sets by the likes of Rebecca Ferguson and Beyonce. Very sadly, the

quarter also marked the passing of one of Sony’s greatest stars, Whitney Houston, an event that clearly

had a profound effect on many music fans as they

snapped up significant copies of her singles and albums.
