he four-millionth UK sale achieved by Adele’s 21 understandably stole the headlines in Q1, but its

predecessor 19 reached its own milestone in the period. Four years on from release, the XL

album broke through 2 million domestic sales after it shifted another 117,927 copies to finish as the quarter’s top-selling catalogue studio album, according to Official Charts Company figures. A quartet of albums released the

following year after 19 and now more than two years old, so qualifying for catalogue status, sat immediately below it on the quarter-end catalogue studio albums chart. Island act Florence + The Machine’s

debut Lungs took silver medal position after selling another 43,833 copies, taking its cumulative UK sales beyond 1.5 million, while Lady Gaga’s own Interscope/Polydor debut The Fame was third, Gentlemen Of The Road/Island’s Mumford & Sons fourth with Sigh No More and Beyonce’s RCA-handled I Am Sasha Fierce fifth to complete the 2009 contingent. In a period in which their latest album

Mylo Xyloto sold another 200,849 copies in the UK, Coldplay placed three of their previous efforts among the Top 20

catalogue studio albums of the quarter as they generated nearly an additional 40,000 sales combined. There are also multiple appearances for

Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna and Paul Simon who turns up both as a solo artist and with his erstwhile partner Art Garfunkel. First released by Warner Bros back in 1986, Graceland was subject to a 25-year overhaul by Sony last autumn and has continued selling well into 2012 with around 14,000 extra sales between January and March to rank 12th on the catalogue

studio albums chart. Eight places below, Simon & Garfunkel’s farewell Bridge Over Troubled Water added nearly 11,000 sales to its colossal 3 million plus UK total in a quarter in which Adele’s 21 came the closest any album has to matching the 33 weeks it spent at number one during 1970 and 1971. The duo’s Greatest Hits was the quarter’s third top catalogue greatest hits album. Pink Floyd’s The Wall returned to the

programme of the band’s recordings and was the 15th biggest catalogue studio album of the quarter. Nearly 30 years its junior, The Script’s self-titled first album was subject to renewed interest following exposure for frontman Danny O’Donoghue on BBC One’s The Voice. Whitney Houston’s sudden death on

February 11 instantly provoked a wave of tribute buying, hence the position of the RCA-handled The Ultimate Collection at the top of the quarter-end catalogue greatest hits chart. Another of her retrospectives Whitney: The Greatest Hits is 11th. Although this chart takes in sales

across the entire quarter, in the period from when her passing was announced to the end of March nearly 180,000 Houston albums were sold in the UK, with 220,000 singles purchased. Madonna’s appearance in fourth place

on the catalogue greatest hits chart with the Warner Bros-issued Immaculate Collection came against the backdrop of exposure around her Super Bowl appearance on February 5 and coverage leading up to the release of new studio album MDNA, including a guest slot on Graham Norton’s BBC One chat show. She also made it to 13th position with Celebration, her farewell retrospective for Warner before her Live Nation agreement and a subsequent record deal with Universal’s Interscope kicked in.
