Film: 21st Century Literacy I

don’t think I have met yet a teacher who doesn’t use film at some point in lessons. Film material is accessible in so many ways including online platforms but without contextualisation, but it is the kind of curated resources related to the curriculum that we receive from Film Education which are so invaluable.

Why is film so useful? Because film is an equaliser. A good film, however long or short, tells a narrative through the script, soundtrack and visual elements. It doesn’t really matter how the film wants to impact, the simple fact is that it does impact every child. A child who is less able in written exams will find a subtlety in the visual images that the “more able” child will miss as they concentrate on the facts conveyed by the narrator or character. When making films with children the same applies, the child with the higher writing score will write a gifted script while the lower ability literacy child will show their true genius in visual imagery. I, for one, know that Charlie Chaplin was a genius and yet I have never read anything he has written…

Rockfon Eclipse ceiling islands have been installed to enhance the acoustics throughout the open plan spaces by allowing air to circulate while absorbing sound from both sides of the panel. Manufactured from stone wool resin bonded mineral wool they are available in square or rectangular formats.

The frameless islands have a minimalistic sharp-looking edge underlined by a subtle bevel. Hung from suspension wires using spiral anchors that are easy to install, the long-lasting smooth, white surface ensures a perfect reflection of light and heat.
