School Caterers School Caterers back new Ama’zing’ juice drink
Aimia foods’ Zing, an exciting new lightly sparkling juice drink is helping schools across the UK to supply a healthy and appealing alternative for kids. Carys Delve from Aimia Foods comments:
“Being healthy is all good and well but encouraging school children to adopt a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge, and it’s something that we are working on with school caterers.
“It is so important to get the balance right. Containing a minimum of 70% fruit juice and delivering one of a child’s five-a-day, the newly launched Zing, a lightly carbonated drink, is made with only fruit juice and sparkling water. It has no added sugars, preservatives, colourings or additives, meaning that Zing really does ride the healthy drinks trend.
“Zing was developed using a focus group of more than 150 teenagers, which instantly helped us to identify the new trends, and really make this drink something school children will want to drink. When it comes to packaging, we’ve made sure that Zing’s 250ml cans appeal perfectly to high school students. The cans are designed with the target audience in mind with recognisable icons from modern day life, again helping us to stick with the trend for edgier, cooler drinks. “It is important in the current climate that everyone gets the best value for money, and Zing complements offers including meal deals extremely well. With an RSP of 69p it’s the perfect price.
“To support the launch of Zing we have been going into schools sampling the drinks with the
pupils. This has given us the opportunity of seeing the reaction of our target audience to this new stealth health drink.”
When Aimia Foods decided to venture into schools to sample Zing, a relationship was formed with Catering Academy. Catering Academy is a dynamic independent catering company, which is building a reputation for bringing innovative solutions to a wide range of catering services for the Business and Industry, Education and Healthcare sectors. A staggering 65% of Catering Academy’s business is in the Education sector and it has won prestigious industry awards at the inaugural EDUcatering Excellence Awards.
For Tina Snowden, a catering manager for Catering Academy, healthy products are vital and it is a key trend that the Education sector has to take on board. According to Tina, finding the right mix of edgy, healthy and tasty drinks can prove very difficult. However, with the introduction of Zing into her schools Tina may have found what she has been looking for.

Commenting on the success of Zing in her school is Tina Snowden, catering manager from Catering Academy:
“As a catering manager, it is my job to provide a service in line with legislation and client expectation that also gives children exactly what they want when it comes to food and drink. They can be a tricky audience, and products have to appeal to them on a number of levels. In all my years in the industry I have seen trends come and go, but right now image and health is everything. To be able to provide the children with a can that they are going to find ‘cool’, which also happens to be one of their five a day, is fantastic. That is why I was intrigued to see what the pupils would think of Zing when Aimia came to the school.
“The sampling was a huge success. Every student who purchased a meal was given a raffle ticket which they redeemed for a free can of Zing. The children absolutely loved Zing and cleared in excess of 700 cans in just one lunch-time. I knew straight away that this drink was a must have and since the sampling, Zing is now stocked in the school and sells in the region of 1,500 cans a week. “The kids can’t get enough of it. We have put Zing into vending machines too so that the children can purchase a can whenever they want, and it has increased vending sales. It is quickly outselling its competitors and is going from strength to strength.
“Being so impressed by Zing myself, I recommended the drink to other catering managers at the catering managers

meeting which takes place on a monthly basis. I am really pleased to report that Zing will be going into all the high schools in the region along with many others all over the country. In my experience of catering, Zing is something of a revelation. It is super healthy, and perfectly aimed at teenagers. It tastes great too! “It all sounds very simple but as mentioned earlier, school children are a
tough crowd to please, particularly when it comes to providing healthy products. In Zing I believe that we have found something very unique, loved by both teenagers for its taste and image, and parents for its health values. It is hard to find a sparkling fruity drink that provides one of your five a day. As a catering manager I couldn’t ask for any more from a product.”
