Aspens cooks up healthy eating interactive roadshow for Runcorn students
F
resh, healthy food is fun food, was the message that students at St Chad’s Catholic and Church of England High School, Runcorn, took away from an action-packed morning of hands-on, interactive healthy eating and cooking activities organised by school caterer Aspens Services.
More than 200 Year Eight students, aged 12 and 13, took part in the event which included the chance to taste exotic fruits including dragon fruit, pomegranates, durian and star fruit and try lemonade made using fresh lemons (and compare it with a shop-bought version).

In addition, two Aspens chefs, helped by students, competed in a healthy eating ‘cook-off’ using fresh ingredients chosen by their helpers to produce nutritionally balanced meals which were judged by the audience. Students also tried out the special ‘smoothie bike’ – which features a blender operated by pedal power to create fruit smoothies – and made their own juice combinations from fresh fruit and vegetables. Aspens food and beverage executive Ken Tee says: “The students threw themselves into the activities and had a fantastic time trying different ingredients, working with the chefs in the cook-off and making their own juice drinks and smoothie combinations. As a caterer, we provide our customers with healthy, high-quality meals, made using fresh ingredients and using local, seasonal produce. We also love working with schools and students to show just how much fun it is to learn about food and healthy eating and support schools’ work to encourage students to live well. Events like this are a great way of doing it.”
