WMA helps set MCERTS standard

IWEX exhibitor, the Water Monitoring Association (WMA), is now acting as project manager for work to convert the MCERTS standards for water monitoring equipment into a European standard. MCERTS relates to equipment such as automatic samplers, online analysers and portable analysers. Newstead Consulting Limited (NCL) is carrying out the work to develop the European standard, with financial and technical support from the CENWATER group. The group consists of the WMA, Environment Agency, Sensors for Water Interest Group (SWIG), water monitoring equipment manufacturers, industrial users of water monitoring equipment, and other organisations interested in MCERTS. This work is being carried out to:

n Establish European standards specifying uniform requirements for the performance of water monitoring equipment n Eliminate the need for repeat testing and approvals of water monitoring equipment in EU member states to meet varying national requirements n Provide commercial benefits and improved marketing opportunities for manufacturers of equipment that meet these new standards both within the European single market and in

MCERTS has become a mandatory requirement in recent PPC permits issued to process operators. It is a certification scheme that is both accepted and formally recognised within the UK and internationally.

The scheme’s benefits include: MCERTS has become a mandatory requirement

international markets n Facilitate improved acceptance and recommendation of equipment that meet these new standards by European regulatory authorities

The WMA says it works closely with the Environment Agency in the development of the MCERTS schemes relating to water monitoring. These schemes include: n Equipment for continuous monitoring discharges to rivers, smaller watercourses and the sea n Direct toxicity assessment of effluents n Portable equipment for monitoring water n Sampling and chemical testing of water n Self-monitoring of effluent flow

Careers boost offered by IoW

The Institute of Water (IoW) is waiving its usual £168 professional review fee for visitors to IWEX. Careers prospects for engineers in the water industry are being boosted by an offer of free professional review for Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status.

The Institute of Water, the UK’s only professional body solely dedicated to supporting the careers of people working in the UK water industry. According to the Engineering Council, there has been an increase in demand for professional registration and, given the economic climate, the Institute of Water is now aiming to help more engineers to progress in their careers. “Becoming registered is an increasingly important career

move for engineers,” said the IoW’s chief executive, Lynn Cooper. “Not only does registration improve job security and career prospects, but average salaries are much higher than those of non-registered engineers. The difference can be as much as 40% for a 45-year-old.

“The IoW is dedicated to supporting the careers of people working at all levels across the industry. We have simplified the process for applying to be registered as an Engineering Technician which has removed the professional review fee. Given the pressures of the current economic climate we are removing the financial barrier for Incorporated and Chartered Engineers.” The IoW will be providing expert advice on the application process to visitors at IWEX and interested engineers will be given a promotional code to claim their free professional review. To register with the Engineering Council, the candidate will need to become a member of the Institute of Water.

Water companies reach Environment and Energy Awards final

Some of the UK’s largest water companies, including Yorkshire Water Services, Anglian Water, Veolia Water Central and Wessex Water, are among the shortlisted companies for this year’s hotly- contested Environment & Energy Awards, announced by organisers Faversham House Group.

Celebrating excellence and innovation, these awards have established themselves

as one of the highest levels of attainment within the environmental sector, and are fiercely contested by businesses and organisations of all sizes. The high standard of entries, including a number of first-time entrants, reflects an interesting trend – that even in times of austerity, companies are continuing to increase their commitment to sustainable practices – with a particular focus on investment in new technology and trained personnel. All winners will be announced on the evening of Tuesday 22 May, at a special black tie dinner held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. Hosted by comedian Dominic Holland, the evening promises to be an exciting combination of networking, celebration and entertainment. Donna Bushell, event director, said: “The quality of this year’s entries has once again been excellent and resulted in an outstanding shortlist of environmental, energy and sustainable businesses from across a broad range of sectors that are clearly making a serious commitment to a low- carbon future. We would like to thank all our award entrants for taking the time to enter, and congratulate the finalists on their achievement.” For more information, email stacey.bird@fav-house.com or visit www. sustainablilitylive.com.
