they perceive as China’s best self- interest, as do all nations. China has internal problems that also demand the attention of those same leaders. That is not to say they are beyond making a careless move in relation to their geographical sphere, inherent in a totalitarian state. The present U.S. armed forces are significantly stronger than those of China. China does not maintain a military presence off the U.S. coast, but the U.S. flaunts a military pres- ence off the Chinese coast. There is no question the U.S. has enemies who wish to hurt us, but China is not one of them. It is incumbent upon U.S. leaders to convince Chi- nese leaders that the U.S. does not want to hurt them. Dowd’s article supports the American military- industrial complex who needs big potential enemies in order to sell big weapon systems. President [Dwight] Eisenhower’s ghost is whispering, “I told you so!” —Lt. Col. C.W. “Bill” Getz, USAF-Ret. Fairfield, Calif.

18 MILITARY OFFICER JUNE 2012
Not to Be Outgunned The article “Gunning for Victory” [April 2012] left out “one of the best,” the M61 Vulcan, a Gatling gun with perhaps the longest his- tory of any modern-day weapon system. The Vulcan Project began in 1946 in response to the need for a faster firing air-to-air gun to take on jet aircraft. The result was a six-barrel Gatling gun firing 20 mm rounds at the rate of 6,000 a minute. It was used in the B-52, B-58, F-104, F-105, F-106, F-111, F-4E, A-7D, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, and F-22 Raptor. The period from 1946 to 2012 covers 66 years, a commendable legacy! —Lt. Col. J.N. Komich, USAF-Ret. Beverly, Mass.
