Scope for improvement Think that there’s nothing left to do in your data centre? There’s just a slim chance that you are the world’s greatest data centre manager and that you can do nothing more to improve the facilities and IT functions – at least until tomorrow, when a dozen new products and services are launched and you need to evaluate them…However, chances are that, if you think there’s nothing left to achieve, it’s time for a new job! As the articles in this issue make clear, there’s nearly always room to improve one or more aspect of the data centre and the IT it houses.

In our analyst column, Tony Lock concludes: “There is scope in most organizations to improve IT service delivery with clear benefits for the business’. Move on to our cover article, and the message is the same: “I see endless possibilities for TalkTalk to keep evolving, to keep challenging the status quo and to keep re-inventing communications and network services to help British business improve”.

The focus on storage networking vendor, Tintri, and UK Channel partner, S3, puts some flesh on the innovation bones – purpose-built flash storage for virtual machines (VMS), rather than clunky, legacy storage…Harrods migrates to a new data centre…Brocade’s Marcus Jewell tells us ‘it’s time to redefine the economics of the Campus network’…and there are articles from companies that may well be new names to many of our readers, offering new ideas and technologies.

If you don’t already do it, why not make a fixed time each week to investigate innovations – rather than muddling through, leaving endless emails, brochures and magazines waiting to be read, give up a couple of hours to look through them all. Chances are that this time will turn into much more time, and money, saved in the long term.
