A passion for challenging convention


‘Migrate, Converge, Transform’ is the mantra of TalkTalk Business as it has evolved from a pure telecoms company into a facilities based provider, and as it seeks to help its customers make a similar ICT transformation – from isolated communications services to an integrated, business-driving solution. DCS talks to Andrew Lockwood.


QHow would you describe TalkTalk Business as a company right now? Still a telecoms company, or something more than that?


A I’d say we’re still definitely a telecoms company but a 21st century telecoms company. Telecoms today doesn’t mean just phone


calls and a bit of broadband – successful providers need to embrace all technologies and services delivered from the network. Four years ago we were a telephone company – more than 95% of our revenue was from a phone call or a line rental. In the last four years we’ve changed hugely and today we provide a range of ICT solutions to businesses and channel partners. Today more than half our profits come from next-generation data services that didn’t exist four years ago.


QHow has the company evolved over the years to reach this point?


A At the start of our journey I set out a three-stage transformation strategy for us and for our customers and partners. It was clear that everything would be moving to IP and all services would be converged over one “fat pipe” into the business. So the primary stage of our transformation was to ensure the connection to the premise was on our network. Over the last few years we’ve developed the widest and most competitive range of connectivity options. We called this stage “Migrate” (to our Next Generation Network “NGN”). The second stage of our strategy is “Converge” which recognises that voice and data services will converge over IP connections. We’re currently rolling out a range of IP voice services that allow businesses
