THE COST-PER-MILE OF motoring versus that of rail travel – which the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) says is persuading increasing numbers of people to switch from road to rail.
The Automobile Association says the average cost of petrol in the UK is now more than 140p a litre; 10 years ago, according to thespeedlimit.org.uk website, it was less than 70p per litre.

Europe’s air transport industry is calculated to support 1.9 million jobs and, including indirect employment, 5.1 million jobs.
Direct and indirect contribution to Europe’s GDP: US$485 billion.
The European region represents 15% of total jobs and 34% GDP generated directly and indirectly by the air transport industry.
Passenger numbers are expected to reach nearly 1.2 billion in 2030; by then, European aviation will have generated an extra 841,000 jobs.
Globally, aviation supports 56.6 million jobs and its worldwide economic impact is estimated at US$2.2 trillion.

Nearly one-in-five respondents to a poll by international travel search site Skyscanner say the French are the rudest nation in the world. The Russians are almost as bad, attracting 16.6% of the vote, followed by the British, who were condemned by 10.4% of those polled.
