outspoken critique of Chavis- mo, Chavez’s particular brand of socialism. Eppel says government inter-
ference led him to shut down a call center he operated and that officials have tried unsuccessful- ly to isolate him from the com- munity leadership. But still he blames the Chavez government for economic policies that have led to periodic shortages of food staples, frequent devaluations of the bolivar fuerte and a marked drop in oil output. “The government that takes
over is going to have a difficult situation,” he said. “Politics you can manipulate, but the econo- my is a science. It’s very hard to manipulate the economy. And when hard times come, they will come for everybody. And un- fortunately, those hard times might hit the Jewish commu- nity also.” If such predictions come to pass,
it may send even more Venezue- lan Jews to places such as Flor- ida, the destination of choice for Jewish expats. Pynchas Bren- er, the chief rabbi of Venezuela for 44 years and friends with all its presidents “except this one,” is one of many who now call the Miami area home. “I could have stayed on for
three more years, but there is tremendous personal insecu- rity,” Brener said. “Besides, I have eight of my nine grand- children here.” Brener sees two possible
U
paths for the country: It could become like Cuba, with the Jew- ish community losing most of its verve and viability, or Chavismo might be defeated at the ballot box. Of the two, he sees the lat- ter as more likely. “Even though the govern-
ment has won a few elections — although not fairly because they used government resourc- es — I still see half the popula- tion or close to half the popula- tion resisting, so I don’t think it will turn into Cuba,” he said. “I don’t think the government will be able to do whatever they want.” Despite the uncertainty, some
glimmers of hope are visible. On Sunday, a new synagogue, Tiferet Israel Este, was inaugu- rated in Los Palos Grandes, an affluent Caracas neighborhood that is home to a sizable Jewish community. The synagogue of- fers worshipers a safer alterna- tive to an older temple in a for- merly Jewish part of town now considered dangerous. “As Kohelet said, there is a
time for everything,” said Isaac Cohen, who replaced Brener as chief rabbi. “[The new syna- gogue] shows people seek reli- gion in their lives, and we have freedom of religion here. “It pains us, it hurts us that there is no Israeli ambassador or embassy, but we hope that day will come and ties will be renewed. When will it happen? Nobody o
but G-d knows.”

made with a police presence and security camera installa- tions.” Yet neither Netanyahu nor
anyone else has the right to be surprised. This is not rocket science. The problem extends beyond the bounds of the cem- etery. The greatest menace lurks on the approaches to the cem- etery, especially near Ras al- Amud Square and on the way between Mount Scopus and the Mount of Olives. The majority of attacks orig-
inate from an Arab boys’ school positioned directly alongside the road leading to the incom- parable and venerable Jewish cemetery. Ambushes are prepared there
well in advance. Several ways exist of put-
ting an immediate and effec- tive end to the daily anti-Jew- ish assaults. The school can be closed until ironclad guaran- tees are obtained that brutal- ity from its grounds will cease forthwith. Any repeat aggres- sion would lead to another clo- sure. Alternatively, the police can
establish a permanent presence on the road to the cemetery, both to protect visitors and to deter their tormentors. To allow unrestrained law-
lessness at so hallowed a site is fundamentally unthinka- ble.

pre-First Temple days 3,000 years ago. It still serves that purpose. The only break was during
the 19 years of Jordanian rule between 1948 and 1967. Not only were Jews barred
entry then (in brazen contra- vention of armistice treaty obli- gations), but ancient, irreplace- able tombstones were ripped out and used for the construc- tion of roads, army barracks and — underscoring the intent to defile, desecrate and humili- ate — as walls and floors of pub- lic latrines.
The Jewish return to an in-
disputably Jewish site — the final resting place for a verit- able pantheon of spiritual, cul- tural and national paragons — is what world opinion and the Arabs now deem as “occu- pation.” But the Jewish State must
not subscribe to inimical dis- tortion. Mourners should not fear
for their lives at any cemetery anywhere in Israel, but all the more so at the oldest con- tinuously used burial ground on earth.
