FX “The track is simple but made interesting because I’m always playing with the automation to keep it rolling. I don’t think any one bar is exactly the same as another… I do generally record my automation in live with a controller but with this one I wanted it to be precise, so I pencilled in directly… Some people fi nd it a bit cheesy but I love using a bit of white noise on my track; using it in a build-up always does the job in a club situation.”


MIX-DOWN “In all my projects I will bounce the tracks down to audio stems... At this point I do all my EQinq; basically it is the mix-down stage with a little bit more cutting and splicing… Because it is in audio, it makes it easier to say the tune is fi nished. You get the midi stage as good as possible and then move on to the audio stage where everything, the groove and the melody, is static… you can only do so much with the audio at that point.”

FINAL THOUGHTS “All in all it is the simplicity that is the key to it… the idea of taking a groove from your head and getting it down onto the page and not over-complicating the scenario… I thought of a cool groove in my head, I managed to get it down into Logic with a nice synth-line and just kept it as simple as possible, so it really would stick in people’s heads.”
