T.WILLIAMS CHATS TO POINT BLANK ABOUT HOW HE WORKS IN THE STUDIO AND DECONSTRUCTS HIS NEW TRACK ‘SYNTHIA’ IN LOGIC

Point Blank Online School brings you weekly fresh nuggets of music production advice courtesy of the team of pro producer course developers and tutors… This week T.Williams stopped by.

T. has fast become one of the UK’s most promising producers with releases on Local Action, Pattern and his own label Deep Teknologi. Possessing a true fl air for laying down huge club tracks which straddle the lines between house, garage and techno, he is the one to watch in the current melting pot of UK bass music. We chatted to him about how he works in the studio, based around a deconstruction of Synthia, the second track from his new ‘We Can’ EP. Check the full interview out in the video above and some key thoughts below.

INITIAL IDEAS “I just vibe and make what I feel comfortable doing at that time on that specifi c day… With the track ‘Synthia’ I thought of my fi rst idea while I was on my way to the studio. I might then just hum something

into my iPhone to record… Another idea I had when starting the track was that I would have the synth-line gradually creeping in”

SYNTH-LINE “With this track I started off with the synth-line. Right from the start I knew that I wanted to have that elevated feel to it, the dancefl oor was fully in mind… The synth itself is straight out of Logic’s EXS24; being honest, anyone could get involved with it... To get that feel of rising I’ve opened up the release at the end of each phrase… I added a few mutes within the piano roll to create a bit of differentiation.”

PERCUSSION “I felt that the Amen break was the most fi tting… Chopped up in the EXS24 and using just the kick and the snare… I added some little percussive elements that you may not be able to hear in the fi nished beat but as it is this track is solely made up of drums, bass and synth-line, so the drums needed to be full.”
