Martinsville, VA — The City of Martinsville Virginia Sheriff’s Offi ce has a motor fl eet with two Harley- Davidson®

FLHTP motorcycles. As a City Sheriff’s

Offi ce the motors are used for funeral escorts, parades and to lead motorcycle rides. In Virginia, City Sheriff’s do not have law enforcement as a primary reasonability.

The Sheriff, Steve Draper, is an avid motorcycle rider and saw the value of using motorcycles as part of a “public relations” tool. “Our Harley-Davidson® motorcycles are a tremendous help on motorcycle rides throughout the area” the Sheriff says. “We also utilize them to assist the Virginia State Police during race events at Martinsville Speedway”.

Draper, a certifi ed motor offi cer himself, rides his Harley-Davidson®

FLHTP motorcycles every chance he

gets. “Most of the time, I have to assist with rides and functions on weekends” the Sheriff says.

There are six certifi ed motor offi cers in the Martinsville Sheriff’s Offi ce including two female offi cers, one of which is the Sheriff’s Offi ce Chief Deputy and one retired Lieutenant.

“I am very proud of our motor offi cers and I truly appreciate them”. “Our offi cers are on their own time, most of the time, when performing duties on our Harley-Davidson®

motorcycles”.

“One of the impressive things to me is that citizens want to take pictures of our Harley-Davidson®

motor-

cycles”. “We have parents wanting to take pictures of their children or their spouse next to the motorcycles”. “I have never had a citizen ask me to have a picture next to one of our marked cars”, the Sheriff said.

The two Harley-Davidson® motorcycles the Sheriff’s

Offi ce has are hand-me-downs, one 1999 and one 2000 model. The Sheriff’s Offi ce would love to have two new Harley-Davidson®

FLHTP motorcycles but

can not justify the city paying for them. They hope to begin a fund soon that will hopefully one day allow them to purchase two new Harley-Davidson®

motorcycles.
