f you’re familiar with Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs’ landmark city park, you know about its soaring sandstone formations and wide paved pathways. But how much do you know about its bats?


“One of our absolutely most popular events is the bat walk,” says Bonnie Frum, director of opera- tions. The walks start about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in the summer. Make a reservation, bring a fl ash- light, and dress for the cool evening temperatures. Echo locators allow the audience to hear the fl ying mammals as they communicate. Another popular program is the falcon watch,


6:30 p.m. Wednesdays through late May. Bring binoculars, or use the spotting scopes available. Free guided hikes start at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily year round (and sometimes more often on

busy summer days). Wellness Walks begin at 9 a.m. every Wednesday morning, also year round. Free snacks are included. Rent a Segway at the visitors’ center, get a riding


lesson, and sign up for a tour. Or arrange for a rock climb (age 5 through adults), or a horseback ride through nearby Academy Riding Stables. For any of these programs, call for reservations
