Fuel-saving tips: Your ideas, and ours
AAA is a non-partisan organization providing unbiased reporting of gas prices through its popular weekly Fuel Gauge Report, and supports the national dialogue on gas prices by offering objective and accurate perspective to the media and motorists year-round. So what did a recent report say about gas price
increases? “While oil prices for much of 2012 were driven by global news—geopolitical tension with Iran, sovereign debt concerns in the Euro zone, and signs of economic recovery both domestically and abroad— recent increases came primarily as a result of weakness in the U.S. dollar.” Rising gasoline prices are changing our members’ driving behaviors. In
a recent survey, 60 percent of respondents said they save gas by combining trips and errands. Some also consider purchasing a more fuel- efficient vehicle or one that uses an alternative fuel. Carpooling and public
transportation can save you gasoline and parking fees, reduce everyone’s exposure to pollution and congestion. But a hybrid car or light rail may not be a solution for everyone, so how can motorists lessen their pain at the pump? The following are a few of AAA’s recommended fuel-saving tips: uStick to a routine maintenance schedule. Keep tires properly inflated
to the mall. uFind the best route to work, shopping, recreation and other
destinations by using an online mapping tool such as AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner. uSlow down. For most vehicles, fuel economy drops off significantly
when traveling more than 60 miles per hour. As a rule of thumb, you can assume that every 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional 20 cents per gallon. uQuick starts and sudden stops waste fuel and increase the odds of a
costly crash. uLighten your vehicle. Clean out the trunk, cargo areas and passenger
compartments. A heavier vehicle uses more fuel. Whether you’re driving across town, around the state or touring the nation, AAA wishes everyone safe, enjoyable and less-costly travel this summer.
