ver the years, explorers and cartographers have given names to nearly every notable place and feature in the state. The chosen monikers hailed from a variety of sources. Some origi- nated with native Indians, while others came from the Spanish. Many of the state’s best bear the names of individuals. Some were famous fi gures.
