TECHNO or house? Filthy dirt or butt-shaking funk? These must be daily questions for Maceo Plex, aka Eric Estornel, who was born in Miami, Florida, but now lives in Valencia, Spain. Once best known under his Maetrik moniker (check his recent live mix for Sven Väth’s Cocoon to get up to date), the output for dark, brooding dancefloor juggernauts, his productions as sex and synth-obsessed Maceo Plex – see the recent ‘Under The Sheets’ and ‘High & Sexy’ EPs – have been winning over all kinds of fans and tearing up Europe
and the US. Fortunately, he’s not asking us to choose this week, instead showing off another aspect of his character, that of the old school junglist. Proving that he knows his amens from his Amens, it includes Omni Trio’s ‘Trippin On Broken Beats’ and Origin Unknown’s ‘Valley Of The Shadows’, two of DJ Mag’s favourite tracks of all time. Throw in some Aphex Twin and Shut Up & Dance and he’s keeping it live like 1995.
